Sarita Rivera Avilés
Associate Attorney
Sarita was born in Puerto Rico. She is an immigration attorney whose dedication to the law and advocacy for vulnerable communities is deeply rooted in her own life experiences. Having had to navigate the justice system from a young age, Sarita developed an early and enduring passion for the law and its power to protect individuals, uphold their rights, and create meaningful change. That experience continues to shape her approach to the practice of law and her commitment to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to be heard and treated with dignity.
During her undergraduate studies, Sarita was involved in a nonprofit organization that provided support to coastal communities in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria. This experience deepened her commitment to public service and strengthened her understanding of the importance of community-based advocacy, particularly during times of crisis and uncertainty. Additionally, while in Law School, she had the opportunity to participate in the Criminal Law Clinic with the Public Defender’s office and their Juvenile Justice Program. Through this experience, she gained valuable insight into the legal system and the unique challenges faced by young people involved un juvenile proceedings. Her work further reinforced her commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals and advocating for fair and compassionate treatment under the law.
Before joining Rafael Tirado & Associates, Sarita worked with a nonprofit organization providing legal services to immigrant children and other vulnerable individuals. Through this work, she gained valuable experience in immigration court proceedings, removal defense, humanitarian relief, legal research and writing, motion practice, and the preparation of immigration applications. Her work representing individuals facing complex immigration challenges strengthened her commitment to compassionate, client-centered advocacy and to protecting the rights and interests of those navigating an often-complex legal system.
Sarita approaches each case with diligence, empathy, and a strong commitment to understanding the individual circumstances behind every legal matter. She believes that effective legal representation extends beyond knowledge of the law; it requires listening to clients, recognizing their unique experiences, and advocating tirelessly on their behalf. Guided by her own experiences and a longstanding commitment to public service, Sarita remains dedicated to fighting for the rights of vulnerable individuals and helping clients navigate the legal system with confidence and dignity.
Outside of her legal practice, Sarita enjoys attending sporting events and spending time in nature. She values opportunities to explore the outdoors, connect with others, and recharge outside the demands of her profession.
